Tag is quite possibly the most exciting and most played traditional game in the world. Along with its variations, tag is played wherever you find groups of children. Children love to run, jump and chase each other. Teaching your child to play tag will keep them moving and active while having fun! Tag teaches children to follow rules, act quickly and wisely, and to be good sports. It also helps them develop speed, agility and physical endurance. Parents can play tag with their children and get a jolly good workout too!
Basic Tag Game
There are several variations to the game but in essence, it involves having one player being the ‘Catcher’ who has to run fast enough and ‘tag’ someone. Once a player is ‘tagged’, he/she becomes the ‘Catcher’. The game continues until everyone collapses in exhaustion!
Freeze Tag
A variation is Freeze Tag. The ‘Catcher’ chases others and yells “Freeze!” when he tags another. When tagged, that child must “freeze”” and stand stock still in the position they were in when tagged, unless and until another runner touches them and “unfreezes” them as they run by. The objective is to freeze all the other players. The last person to be tagged becomes the ‘Catcher’.
Chase Belts Tag
If you have 2 or 3 players, you may want to try Chase Belts Tag. Players are connected by a Chase Belt. One player is appointed the ‘Chaser’ and his/her objective is to prevent the other player from breaking away, so he has to try to stay as close as possible to the other person. The other player will try to break away. Chase belts are available on FamilyFun.SG.
There are dozens more variations of tag that you can easily teach your child. Most require some open space and some supervision to make sure things are stay safe and fair. Getting out there and joining the fun will give you some healthy exercise. Keeping these traditional games going will make sure generations to come will experience the wholesome pleasure and excitement of tag! Have fun!
